RESULTS

HE three leading contenders are still on course for the championship title at Kingarth. Defending champion Gordon Pettigrew, Donald Standaloft, who is currently title-holder at Port Bannatyne, and David Cameron are all through to the semi-finals. Newcomer Richie More, in his first season with the club, joins the “big three” in the last hurdle before Sunday’s final. More made it after a marathon battle that went to the twenty-first hole in the most keenly contested match of the quarter-finals. Opponent David Bryden looked favourite as he went two up with three to play but More hit back in a stunning finish with successive birdies at the sixteenth and seventeenth to get on level terms with one hole to play. The former Rothesay player finally sealed victory at the third extra hole as he completed a run of two under par over the last six holes. Pettigrew, who is bidding for his sixth title, got off to a flying start in his quarter-final match with Bobby Speirs when he birdied the second and completed an outward half of 33 to got four up. He secured a semi-final place with a 5 and 4 victory. Cameron, last year’s runner-up, was also in championship form as he ran out a comfortable winner over Cammy Middleton, while Standaloft went straight into the semis after opponent Gordon Little withdrew through illness. John Girvan secured his place in the final of the “wee championship” for the Cuthbertson Cup with a 3 and 1 victory over Leonard Ferguson after recovering from a one hole deficit at the turn. In the other semi-final Ian McDougall and John Kernaghan have to meet again following their all-square finish last Saturday. “Houdini” McDougall pulled off the escape of the year when he recovered from being four down with five to play by winning the next four holes. Both finals take place on Sunday at 9.00am.

THE Kingarth course will be closed to visitors and non-participants from 10.00am until 4.00pm tomorrow (Saturday) when the club plays host to Port Bannatyne in their annual social match. Team members should be at the course at 12 noon for a 12.30pm tee-off. --

COMPETITION postponements, caused mainly by the condition of the course following the havoc of the winter, have led to alterations to the club’s fixture list. The first round of the Sir Harry Hope Cup will now take place on Saturday, July 12, the McDougall Trophy stableford competition moves to Saturday, July 26, Captain’s Day to Saturday, August 16, and the James Lamont Quaich medal round to Saturday, August 23.
