A BLISTERING
65 in the final qualifying round of the club championship at Kingarth
last Saturday has put Donald Standaloft into pole position for the match-play
stages. On a day of low scoring the former title-holder beat par at
the second, fourth and ninth on his way to a faultless first nine of
31 to set up the score that saw him edge ahead of defending champion
Gordon Pettigrew on aggregate. Both finished on 139 with Standaloft’s
better second round giving him the advantage. Pettigrew also sparkled
on the outward half with a run of four successive threes which helped
him turn on two-under-par 32. An inward 37 saw the six-handicapper finish
on 69. After a first round of 71 David Cameron added a disappointing
76 to finish third on 147, while David Bryden rescued a place in the
knock-out stages when he added a level par 68 to a first-round 81. Ritchie
More also produced a much-improved performance with 73 for a 153 aggregate
and fifth place. Leading scores from Saturday’s qualifier: First Class
